Week 2: Taking Action
Day 12: Rules that Serve Life
Summary: Some people love streaks. They commit to doing something every day and once completed they put an x in their calendar. The theory is that you don’t want to break the chain thereby solidifying the habit. Burkeman, however, says that strict rules often have the opposite effect and suggests instead that of a large commitment not to break the chain we do things dailyish. We should make rules that serve our lives rather than the other way around.
Although many people advocate the motivational power of a long streak, I don’t like them. It’s too much pressure. Still, I’ve tried to learn how to hold a headstand and even though I try to do it dailyish I am very hard on myself on days when I forget to practice.
Homework: Commit to practicing headstands dailyish rather than every day.
